If you feel like you're introducing yourself to your AI tool every single time you open it, that's not how it has to work. There's a real memory setting sitting in there, separate from the profile you fill in once, and almost nobody turns it on.
01Two different settings, not one
People mix these up constantly. The "about me" profile is a block of text you write once and it stays put. Memory is different. It's the tool quietly picking up facts as you talk, on its own, and carrying them into chats you haven't started yet. You can have one without the other, and most people who feel forgotten by their AI actually have neither turned on.
02Turn memory on
It's a few clicks, and it's off by default on most accounts.
- ChatGPT: your name → Settings → Personalization → Memory. Turn it on, and check "Manage memories" to see what it's already picked up.
- Claude: your name → Settings → Profile, for the standing context. For anything ongoing, a Project keeps its own files and instructions loaded automatically every time you open it.
Menus move around. If a label here doesn't match what you see, it's close by, look under Settings.
03Give the big stuff a real home
A fact or two belongs in memory. A whole project doesn't. If you're working on the same thing for weeks, a client, a report, a course you're building, put it in a Project instead. Upload what matters once, write the standing instructions once, and every new conversation inside that project starts already caught up.
04Test it honestly
Ask for something real today. Come back tomorrow in a brand new chat and ask a related question without repeating the context. Whatever it got wrong or forgot is the exact piece that didn't stick, and now you know precisely what to go fix instead of guessing.
⚠ Watch out for
- Stale facts stick around. A project that ended, a rate that changed, a role you left. Memory doesn't know it's out of date. Check it every so often and correct what's wrong.
- Nothing you wouldn't want resurfacing. Memory can carry a detail into a conversation that has nothing to do with where it came from.
- This isn't the same fix as the profile guide. Do both. They cover different gaps.
